Châtel skiing outperforms in warm start to 2023
Skiers in Châtel are still out enjoying the sunshine, the day before the snow returned.
Where was the best snow cover in the Portes du Soleil?
Skiing in Châtel has been shown to be more 'snow sure' than many resorts during the recent unseasonably warm weather. New Year and early January 2023 skiing has not been up to expectations anywhere in the northern alps due to unprecedented temperatures. However Châtel has proved itself more resilient as north-facing slopes have held on to the large snow falls of early December. Piste access all the way down to the main Pré-la-Joux car park remained open. The Ardent lift near Montriond and the Avoriaz village have also maintained snow cover. By contrast, skiers based in nearby Morzine and Les Gets have had to travel further to reach good snow cover. The south facing Swiss resorts in the Portes du Soleil have also had more challenging times.
High altitude skiing in the Portes du Soleil
Châtel offers fast access to the high altitude skiing areas of the Portes du Soleil. These pistes, to the south of Avoriaz, offer good high mountain skiing which has been particularly beneficial in these conditions. Skiers can generally access this area more quickly from Châtel than from Morzine or Les Gets, a great benefit for chalets in the Châtel area.
Andrew Ellson highlighted the Portes du Soleil and Châtel relatively favourably (see graphic) writing in The Times on Wednesday (Wed 7th Jan 2023), noting as well that, "some resorts in the French and Swiss Alps have had to close because of the lack of snow".
Happy guests despite the snow
Fortunately our Christmas and New Year guests were having a great time at our luxury ski chalet, whatever the weather: skiing when it has been sunny and back at our lovely chalet when the weather turned in.
